As a fortified town, Fredericia has played a major role in Denmark‘s history. It has some of the largest and best-preserved ramparts in Europe. Construction of the ramparts began in 1650. The fortifications were designed to protect the crossing from Jutland to the rest of the kingdom against foreign powers. The Swedes, for example, who conquered and destroyed the town in 1657. During the three-year-war the Schleswig-Holstein troops approached the town. The battle of Fredericia, which took place on the 5th and 6th of July 1849, is one of the best known events in Danish military history. In 1864 the Austrians occupied Fredericia, but this time no battle was fought. Ever since, Fredericia has been a peaceful town and a delightful place to live in and visit. Today, the town ramparts form a wonderful park.
