Haines, with a population of under 3,000, lies in the upper northern reaches of the Inside Passage and is an important access point to the Yukon Territory and Interior Alaska. While the town itself may lack the charm of Sitka or Petersburg, the surrounding scenery is stunning. Travelers arriving by boat will see Lynn Canal, the longest and deepest fjord in North America, close in on them. Once you are in town, mountains seem to surround you on all sides. Looming over Fort Seward are the jagged Cathedral Peaks of the Chilkat Mountains.
